The Bijou – A refreshing change in theatre scenery

If you’re looking to catch a good movie this weekend, but not impressed with the lineup at the mainstream theaters, don’t forget to check out what’s playing at the Bijou.

The Bijou is a non-profit, student-run cinema screening independent, art house, foreign, and classic cinema. Established in 1972, the Bijou Theater is known as one of the greatest student-run theaters in the nation. The theater screens a variety of new releases and classic films and is located in the Iowa Memorial Union.

And no, you don’t have to be a student to attend.  Nor will you see only students at the theatre.  This theatre is one of Iowa City’s treasures and the Corridor’s premiere source for alternative cinema.

Ticket Prices

I don’t know about you, but I always seem to suffer from buyer’s remorse after going to a movie at one of the big theaters in the area.  Between the expensive admission tickets and overpriced concessions we always spend more than we expected for movies that seem to be less-than impressive.

At the Bijou admission is only $5.00-and a ticket price for a Sunday afternoon show is only $4.00!

Tickets can be purchased day-of-show only at the IMU Box Office – 319-335-3041.

Upcoming Show (description and quote taken from The Bijou’s Web site)

THE RED BALLOON / WHITE MANE

I’m excited for this one – I remember seeing The Red Balloon when I was a kid!

Directed by Albert Lamorisse
France, 1956 & 1954, 77 min | In French with English subtitles

This new double feature bundles together two re-mastered, visually gorgeous short films from Albert Lamorisse (1953’s WHITE MANE and1956’s THE RED BALLOON). The Bijou is proud to present a film-going experience that both children and their parents will remember for a very long time.

“These are two unique and unforgettable family films — one an essential part of world cinema, the other an underseen gem — that a new generation deserves the chance to get acquainted with ” (The Capital Times).
