Race Against Breast Cancer this Sunday

Every October thousands turn out in downtown Cedar Rapids for the Especially for You Women’s Race
Against Breast Cancer 5K run/walk. This is the events’ 18th year and participation has grown – from a little over a thousand the first year to over 10,000 last year.  According to the event literature, more than 4,000 women have used the money raised from our local event to help fund breast exams, mammographies, ultrasounds or surgical consolation.

I’m lucky enough to work somewhere that organizes a team and so it’s very easy for me to participate. Last year was my first year, and unfortunately the event was canceled due to bad weather. This year the weather should be dry and pretty nice, although it will surely be brisk at 8 am when the race kicks off.

Although this will be my first year walking, I’ve heard it’s an amazing experience.  I’ve been told to see all the women and families who walk, and to hear the stories of the people they are walking in honor of, is truly moving. It makes you feel good to be raising funds for this important health issue, to be doing something good for yourself, and just to be part of a community who cares.

The mission of the Especially for You® Race Against Breast Cancer is to raise funds for women unable to afford breast-cancer screening, and to educate women on the importance of early detection.

Breast cancer is most treatable and curable when detected in its earliest stages. Even so, breast cancer claims an estimated 40,870 lives each year. This number can be reduced when women practice early detection through breast self-examination, clinical breast exam and mammography.

If you’re interested in participating up there’s still time.  Visit: http://www.especiallyforyourace.org/
