The Corridor Offers Many Spooky Attractions for Halloween

From haunted corn mazes, to mansions and crypts the corridor offers some great options for those looking for a fright this Halloween.

Here’s a quick list of haunted houses in the corridor. If you’ve been to any please comment, and feel free to mention any I may have missed.

Frightmare Forrest
Check out their Web site – I bet they are the only haunted house in the corridor with a blog and myspace page. Ha!  Anyway, my husband and I and another couple went to this last year, and it was fun.  Go in with an open mind and be prepare to wait – because it’s usually an hour or two. Their FAQ says it best:

But is it REALLY Scary?

That’s actually up to you. The most difficult part of creating a haunt is to make something that will scare everyone, without offending or alienating anybody. This is much more difficult that you would ever imagine. We’ve done our best to provide a scary environment. However, if you come to our attraction with a bad attitude you probably aren’t going to enjoy it nearly as much as someone who comes wanting to have fun with their friends.

I appreciate their candor.

Cost: Main Haunt: $9.00, Main + Second Haunt: $13.00. You can save $1 admission by bringing a canned food item.

Nightmare Manor
I’ve lived here for years and never made it to this one although I’ve heard it’s good.  I’ve actually gone to it a number of times and bailed because the line was too long – my advice, go early!!   They are boasting they ‘survived’ the flood on their Web site and made some changes from last year, so check it out!

Cost: Adults: $8.00 Age 10 and under –  $7.00 discounts available for Law Enforcement, Firefighters, Active Military &  Age 65+ Seniors – $1 Discount at all times with ID

Bloomsberry Farm’s “Scream Acres”
It can’t be Iowa with a haunted corn maze! This farm in Atkins, Iowa is approximately 20 minutes long with lots of special effects, top of and more than 35 actors and monsters in the field.  They also claim a “haunted barn” that will out-do any haunted house in the area.

Open these Fridays and Saturdays in October: 10th and 11th, 17th and 18th . 24th and 25th from 7 p.m. till 11 p.m.

Cost: $12.00 per person / per trip

Garrison’s Haunted Crypt
This haunted house is located in Garrison, IA in Benton County between Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. Open October 17th, 18th, 24th & 25th, 2008– Doors creep open at 7pm and close at 11pm. Admission $7 — Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult

This one raises money for a good cause too: All proceeds will be used for the purchase of firefighting and emergency response equipment by the Garrison firefighters.

Heart of Darkness Haunted House
This haunted house in Waterloo (about a half hour from Cedar Rapids) claims to be the best in the Cedar valley.  According to their Web site:

Scarecrow’s Nightmare, Slaughter Cabin, Scream in the Dark and the Asylum (haunts that make up The Heart of Darkness) have all been rebuilt for your scaring pleasure. If you thought you saw it all in 2007, this year in 2008 will be more terrifying. We deliver the scariest haunt in the Cedar Valley.
